French official: Arafat to be exhumed in November

RAMALLAH, West Bank (AP) ? Criminal investigators from France will exhume Yasser Arafat's remains next month to try to find out how the Palestinian leader died, a French official said Tuesday.

The official said the team from France will arrive sometime between Nov. 24 and Nov. 26 in the West bank city of Ramallah.

Palestinian authorities confirmed the timetable and said a separate Swiss investigative team would also arrive in Ramallah at the same time. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing.

However, Darcy Christen, a spokeswoman for Switzerland's Institute of Radiation Physics that is expected to conduct the autopsy for the Swiss team, said no date has been confirmed yet.

The push to re-examine circumstances surrounding Arafat's November 2004 death came after a Swiss lab recently discovered traces of polonium-210, a deadly radioactive isotope, on clothes said to be his.

The discovery revived suspicions of poisoning. The immediate cause of Arafat's death was a stroke, but the underlying source of an illness he suffered in his final weeks has never been clear.

Investigators from France and Switzerland are to conduct parallel probes into Arafat's death, acting separately on behalf of Arafat's widow Suha Arafat and the Palestinian Authority, who each had misgivings about the other's investigation. Suha Arafat formally asked for a French investigation into his death this summer.

While their probes are separate, the French and the Swiss are to visit the grave together and will only be allowed one chance to draw samples, according to Palestinian officials.

Earlier in October, the Palestinians said the process of digging out Arafat's remains will be conducted privately.

But keeping the event a secret will likely be a challenge since Arafat lies in a giant mausoleum outside government headquarters in a central area of Ramallah.

Chocolate Mint Sandwich Cookie Recipe from Tv Food And Drink ...

Thin Mints are now relics of your past. THIS is the cookie recipe girl scouts will kill to keep out of your hands!

Forget what The Bossa Nova favorite, ?Once I Loved? tells you. ?I am here to testify that love is in fact not the saddest thing when it goes away. ?A plate of these chocolate mint sandwiches disappearing is far far worse. ?It?s enough to send me to the bottom of the swimming pool in my apartment courtyard, sucking my thumb and desperately holding on to a lead teddy bear.

Think ?chocolate covered mint Oreos? and you?re pretty much on board.

Here is that phenomenal cookie that will keep you up at night, as it quietly calls your name from that easily infiltrated plastic dessert container on your kitchen counter. ?You know? the one you have every intention of taking with you to work the next day because you truly mean to share these sinfully rich cookies ? gooey on the outside, crispy on the inside, and a rich chocolaty peppermint center ? with your co-workers.

But really, is that actually going to happen? ?What have your lousy co-workers really done for you? ?A sheet cake with your name misspelled for your birthday and a Darth Vader Get Well card when you were sick (?I sense a disturbance in the force!?).

Fuck ?em.

Share these with nobody. ?And I guarantee that at least one of these cookies you end up eating while your pajamas are on.

Leftover chocolate peppermint ganache makes a great mid-day treat. Just ask my sister!

Chocolate Mint Sandwiches from Martha Stewart

**A Note from Gary: These cookies are well-worth the little bit of extra effort involved, but this recipe yields only 18-20 cookies. ?Also remember that they are very, very rich. ?Only piggy people like myself and my sister will really want more than one or two. ?Keep that in mind.

For The Cookie

  • 1 cup unsweetened Dutch-process cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • Confectioners? sugar, for work surface

For The Ganache

  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • 6 ounces semisweet chocolate, very finely chopped
  • 3/4 teaspoon pure peppermint extract

For The Glaze

  • 6 ounces semisweet chocolate, very finely chopped

Make cookies: Whisk together cocoa powder and flour in a bowl. Put butter and granulated sugar in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment. Mix on medium-high speed until pale and fluffy, about 3 minutes. Mix in egg until well blended. Reduce speed to low. Add flour mixture; mix until just combined. Divide dough in half, and shape each half into a disk; wrap in plastic. Refrigerate until firm, about 1 hour (or overnight).

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Transfer dough to a work surface lightly dusted with confectioners? sugar. Roll out dough to 1/8 inch thick. Cut out cookies using a 2-inch round cookie cutter (take your time? the dough is a little sticky and breaks apart easily); space 1/2 inch apart on baking sheets lined with parchment paper. Repeat with remaining scraps of dough. Bake cookies until firm, rotating sheets halfway through, 10 to 12 minutes. Let cool completely on sheets on wire racks.

While cookies are in the oven, make ganache: Bring cream to a boil in a small saucepan over medium-high heat. Add chocolate. Cook, stirring constantly until chocolate is smooth. Stir in peppermint extract. Let cool slightly, 10 to 15 minutes.

Spoon 1 teaspoon ganache onto the bottom of 1 cookie; sandwich with another cookie. Repeat with remaining cookies and ganache. Refrigerate until firm, about 10 minutes.
Make glaze: Melt chocolate in a heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water, stirring constantly. Let cool slightly. Dip one flat side of each sandwich into melted chocolate to coat; gently shake off excess. Place sandwiches, chocolate sides up, on wire racks set over baking sheets. Refrigerate until set, about 15 minutes.

Academia should fulfill social contract by supporting bioscience startups, case study says

ScienceDaily (Oct. 25, 2012) ? Universities not only provide the ideal petri dish for cultivating bioscience with commercial potential, but have a moral obligation to do so, given the opportunity to translate public funding into health and jobs, according to a new case study by UCSF researchers.

In an analysis published October 24 in Science Translational Medicine, researchers at the California Institute for Quantitative Biosciences (QB3) assessed the impact of the institute's efforts over the past eight years in supporting entrepreneurs on the three UC campuses in which it operates: UCSF, UC Berkeley and UC Santa Cruz.

The study found that, by lowering the hurdle even very slightly for scientists to become entrepreneurs, the scientists were able to gain extraordinary traction in translating academic research into public benefit, generating 60 new companies in the first six years and attracting 75 new bioscience entrepreneurs in the last year alone.

"This fundamentally changes the way we think of academic science," said Douglas Crawford, PhD, assistant director of QB3 and senior author on the paper. "There is a distressing paucity of new drugs in the pipeline and a clear need for new economic engines in this country. This is a call to action to address that."

The paper cites the following essential support that universities can provide:

  • Bioscience-focused incubators
  • An open network approach that enables any entrepreneur to participate
  • Competitive seed funding options
  • Real-world mentoring that gives scientist a clear sense of market needs.

In the first six years since QB3 started supporting entrepreneurs at the UCSF Mission Bay campus, its growing network of incubators helped launch 60 new bioscience companies at UCSF and across the San Francisco Bay at UC Berkeley -- at a cost of $1 million per year. Of those, 56 are still in business, and 13 have moved beyond the incubator network or have been purchased by larger companies.

Together, those companies have created more than 280 jobs and attracted more than $230 million in either small business grants or venture capital funding for those companies, which are primarily focused on developing therapeutics, medical devices and research tools. That's a 38-fold return on investment, despite current negative trends in seed-stage investing, in addition to the public benefit of any products those companies generate.

The federal government invests $50 billion per year in academic research, including $23 billion for life sciences from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) alone, according to the paper. Both Baltimore, which is home to universities, and the San Francisco Bay Area receive about $2 billion annually in government research and development funding, yet productivity as measured by high-tech startups was 20-fold higher in the San Francisco area than Baltimore, the analysis found.

"This is clearly not an issue of how much funding is coming to the region. It's an issue of how we think about our social contract," said Regis B. Kelly, PhD, UCSF professor of biochemistry and biophysics, executive director of QB3 and a co-author on the paper. "Most people would say the public good a university offers is in providing research and education, but if we truly want to support the public with the benefits of science, we need to stop seeing economic growth and new medications as an inadvertent byproduct of academic research."

Many U.S. universities, including UCSF, are exploring ways to work with the private sector, with the multiple goals of invigorating research on campus, expediting drug development and ultimately improving the therapies that make it to the market.

That's a relatively new way of thinking, though, and one that often has been met with both skepticism and charges of conflicts of interest by those who believe science should be completely devoid of commercial influences.

"We have a fundamental charge as scientists to make an economic impact and to translate science into public benefit," Crawford said. "That's not a traditional way of thinking of universities, but at a certain point, we need to reassess that traditional thinking and take pride in the fact that a university's public contributions extends beyond its classrooms."

The paper points to the mission statement of the NIH, the nation's largest bioscience funding agency, which specifically includes a goal "to enhance the Nation's economic well-being and ensure a continued high return on the public investment in research."

"So as academic scientists, we are actually paid to protect and improve health, to prevent disease, and to enhance economic well-being," Crawford said. "This is not a sell-out to industry. It's an obligation to society."

Among the programs cited in the paper is a year-old mentoring program known as QB3 Startup in a Box, which connects scientists with external legal, professional and business experts to guide them in starting a new company. So far, the program has helped launch more than 75 virtual companies that are currently applying for grants, establishing business plans and pitching to investors. Seventeen are already operational.

Crawford emphasized that the goal of the analysis is not to assess blame, but to find solutions, and there are many. The authors also hope to generate discussion about which solutions work.

Co-authors include Kenneth D. Harrison, PhD and Neena S. Kadaba, PhD, also with QB3.

Does Indian anti-graft crusader have solutions?

NEW DELHI (AP) ? Since launching his own political party this month, a fiery former tax officer has become the bane of some of India's most powerful politicians, publicly accusing them ? by name ? of corruption.

He has accused Congress party chief Sonia Gandhi's son-in-law of making millions off shady real estate deals. He has left India's law minister sputtering to explain what happened to thousands of dollars meant for charity. He has accused the top opposition leader of grabbing land from poor farmers, and challenged the prime minister to a public debate.

He has blamed the ruling Congress party and the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party of colluding with each other and big businesses to pillage the country.

"We want to prove that both main parties are drowning in corruption. They are all in this together," Arvind Kejriwal said at a recent public rally.

A driving force behind previous anti-corruption movements, longtime bureaucrat-turned-activist Kejriwal taps into the disgust of ordinary Indians amid a seemingly unending stream of corruption scandals that have tainted politicians of all stripes over the last few years.

His recent finger-pointing at India's usually opaque political class has also made for great television ? some news stations cover his allegations almost constantly, thrilled by his willingness to name politicians and spell out his accusations against them in detail.

It remains unclear what solutions, if any, he or his new party has to offer.

The politicians he mocks deride his tactics and called him everything from a muckracker to political opportunist. But they also seem unable to ignore him.

Earlier this week, the chief minister of New Delhi, Sheila Dikshit, threatened to sue Kejriwal for defamation if he didn't apologize for using "foul language" ? he had used a word that can be translated as "pimp" when he accused her of colluding with big corporations.

Kejriwal brushed that aside with his seemingly endless self-confidence.

"We have defamed you and we will keep defaming you as long as you work against the common people," he declared.

His first target was Sonia Gandhi's flashy son-in-law, Robert Vadra, a man best known for his bulging biceps and tight T-shirts. Kejriwal accused Vadra of building a 2 billion rupee ($36 million) real estate portfolio from one extremely lucrative transaction, buying a 3.5 acre (1.4 hectare) piece of land for 154 million rupees ($2.8 million) and selling it within a year to India's leading real estate company for four times as much.

In drawing attention to Vadra's mysterious business dealings, he also violated an unspoken rule in Indian politics: Lay off the relatives of politicians.

The Congress party insists Vadra is a private citizen but also rushed to his defense, prompting Kejriwal to ask why government ministers were defending him. Vadra didn't help matters by calling India a "banana republic" on his Facebook page.

Next Kejriwal accused Law Minister Salman Khurshid of embezzling more than 7 million rupees ($129,000) meant for a charity he runs for the disabled.

Khurshid called a news conference to answer Kejriwal's allegations but did little more than fume. His colleague, Steel Minister Beni Prasad Verma pitched in to help by announcing that 7 million rupees was "too small" an amount for a minister to embezzle. In a recent interview, Khurshid described Kejriwal as "pathetically small to be in confrontation with our party."

Then it was the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party's turn. Kejriwal accused party president Nitin Gadkari of grabbing land from poor farmers in western India.

The BJP dismissed Kejriwal as a "boy who cried wolf too many times" and accused him of "overstatement, exaggeration, misstatements."

Kejriwal insists he has evidence backing all his accusations, and often distributes photocopies of government documents that he says prove him right. But none of the allegations have led to charges in India's painfully slow court system, or been independently verified.

With every revelation, though, Kejriwal has promised many more.

Kejriwal first appeared on Indian television screens last year when he created a nationwide anti-corruption movement and hand-picked elderly activist Anna Hazare to lead a crusade for anti-graft legislation. A series of very public hunger-strikes brought immense media attention to the cause, but the movement quickly crumbled, in part because of accusations Kejriwal was riding roughshod over his colleagues and had dreams of entering politics.

On Oct. 2, the birth anniversary of independence leader Mohandas Gandhi, he launched his own party. The anti-corruption vigilante was quickly being followed by dozens of reporters, eager to hear his next allegation.

But beyond accusations, he has yet to offer much else.

"He knows what the problem is," said Vinod Sharma, a well-known political journalist, "but doesn't know how to fix it."

?Tis the season for some creepy-yet-utterly-enjoyable board games for this upcoming Halloween

With Halloween right around the corner, and a giant blowout sale at Little Shop of Magic, located at 4160 S. Durango Drive, I figured it was a good time to blow some money on some appropriately themed board games.

GAME

Last Night on Earth

Last Night on Earth, pictured above on left, is a zombie survival game where players play against the board for their lives. In a full six player game, not needed but definitely more fun, two players control the zombies and the other four play as survivors. Survivor turns allow the survivors to roll a D6 (six-sided die) to move, search for provisions, shoot a zombie or just do nothing. Zombie turns work the same with the exception of their movement: Zombies can only move one space, but they are able to move through walls. Ideally, the survivors will have ranged weapons. If not, a zombie or two will more than likely enter the same space as them. At that point, they fight for their lives, trying to either roll doubles to kill the zombie or higher than the zombie roll to knock it back. Last Night on Earth can be played multiple different ways, simply by changing the scenario cards or randomizing the game board itself. The game even comes with a soundtrack to add to the ambiance. All of the art is a perfect blend of real pictures and aftereffects to make all the cards feel an appropriate level of creepy. For a more in-depth look at Last Night on Earth, Wil Wheaton spotlighted the game on ?TableTop.? This game is perfect for any zombie enthusiasts or anybody that loves cooperative gaming.

Resident Evil: Deck Building Game
I?m a huge fan of the Resident Evil series and this deck building game captures all the spirit of the franchise. Players start the game with 10 cards, a couple of ammo cards and a gun in their inventory. Each player plays as a Resident Evil character with their own special abilities. For example, Claire Redfield gains 20 extra damage after she uses a green or red herb. Players always have a hand of 5 cards, so there is a chance that you might not have a weapon. Because of this, players are encouraged to buy items and weapons from the shop using gold, numbers values assigned to certain cards. If a player feels confident in his/her chances they can kick in the door of the mansion. Players flip the top card of the mansion deck and attempt to do more damage to the infected they are fighting than the health they have. If not, they take the appropriate amount of damage and their turn is over. The game ends when a player successfully finds and defeats staple Resident Evil villain Albert Wesker. The game is a fast-paced race that pushes players to plan moves out turns ahead of time. Perfect for any fans of the series or anybody that enjoys strategy or card games.

Trollhalla
Admittedly, this one doesn?t fit the ?horror theme? I?ve been creating, but when a game promises a Troll version of Valhalla, you can?t really say no. In Trollhalla, players play as disgruntled trolls sick of working under bridges for meager tolls and the occasional farmer to snack on. You and your fellow players take to the seas looking for plunder strewn across the various islands on the board. Players can put their trolls in two positions, seafaring or scouting. The seafaring position allows the player to place the troll on the most favorable ship on the board. A scouting troll gives a player a Weather God card which can have adverse effects on enemy ships. Players may board the same ships, so the real strategy of the game is what order you get placed into the boat. The order dictates what plunder you receive and ultimately how many points you receive (Noblemen are worth more points than goats). The game ends when all plunder has been taken and the points are tallied. Players can receive bonuses for any number of things (collecting all of the Billy Goats, for example), so the game is more about chance than anything. This game is perfect as a break between ?serious? games or for anybody looking for a fun, more casual game.

GAME
Gloom
I love this game. In Gloom, pictured above on right, players receive one of four different families that all have different quirks. The mechanics are the game is simple. Players take a hand of five cards and attempt to play modifiers that lower their characters self-worth. Once a character has a hefty amount of negative points, players can lay down a card that kills off that character. The game ends when one play successfully kills off all of their family. The other advantage to killing a family member is that it secures the points, as other players can play positive modifiers on your characters. The real draw to the game, and the reason I love it, is that every time a player plays a card, they must create a story behind the move. Say you?re playing ?drowned by drink? on ?Cousin James,? you would need to explain what drove Cousin James to get to the point he was ?drowned by drink.? The game is less about the cards and more about creating rich, depressing stories for your characters. The game gets really fun once other players start playing positive modifiers on your characters and have to play off your previously created back story. On top of that almost all of the cards are hilariously alliterated which makes them brilliant to say aloud. This game is perfect for anybody that loves dark humor, telling stories or is an English major.

If you are an Apple shareholder, learn to stomach the volatility. It?s not going away.

If you are an Apple shareholder, learn to stomach the volatility. It?s not going away.

Last night Apple reported Q4 fiscal 2012 earnings. In what seems like a case of deja-vu, the stock slipped by a few percentage points in after market trading. What?s knocking Apple down this time? Well, they shipped a lower number of iPads than Wall Street expected in the quarter, and guidance for the holiday quarter is lower than expected. And the sooner we learn to ignore the short-term nature of Wall Street thinking, the better.

Just to recap, last quarter the stock dropped 5% in after market trading because of perceived weak iPhone sales and weak guidance. Then, within a few weeks, the stock had climbed from about $575 up to $700. Subsequently, it has now dropped back down to about $609. It?s a volatile stock and that?s just something you have to accept if you participate in the stock market.

The numbers

Let?s take a quick look at the key numbers: Apple delivered $36 billion in revenue and $8.66 in earnings per share (EPS). Gross margin was 40%. This is significantly better than guidance, but then again Apple is notorious for giving conservative guidance. Nothing has changed.

Apple?s largest product is the iPhone. In Q4 they sold 26.9 million units, which is up slightly from 26 million units last quarter. Customers knew the iPhone 5 was coming, and people obviously held off on iPhone purchases until it launched, considering the 5 million units sold in the first week after launch.

iPad sales were only 14 million units. This is down from 17 million last quarter, and Wall Street is a bit worried about this. Analysts expected more iPad sales, despite the fact that Apple says sales exceeded expectations. I wonder if people held off buying because of such huge anticipation for the iPad Mini, which Apple just announced this week. Still, iPad sales are up nicely on a year-over-year basis and are bound to be up dramatically in the December quarter. So I?m not worried.

Mac sales and iPod sales were solid, as usual. Macs continue to outgrow PCs, which means Apple is gaining on Microsoft in terms of OS market share. This is a trend that has been ongoing for many years, and shows now signs of slowing down. That?s great news for Apple shareholders.

Is profitability dropping?

During the Q&A session of the conference call, one analyst pointed out that if Apple?s guidance plays out, it will mean an earnings decline year-over year. Why would Apple tell Wall Street to expect the December quarter to be less profitable than last year?s comparable quarter?

CFO Peter Oppenheimer had a well-scripted and quite reasonable answer to this question. First of all, Apple?s December quarter will only be 13 weeks this year. Last year it was 14 weeks, so we should expect a 7% headwind from that alone.

But far more important is the huge refresh of products that Apple just threw at us. The iPhone 5 will be shipping for the entire quarter. The new 4th generation iPad and iPad Mini will ship for the bulk of the quarter. We?ve also got new 13? Macbook Pros and iMacs hitting us. I think Apple is correct in saying that they?ve never had a quarter with so many new products hitting all at once.

Here?s the thing about new products - they cost more to make than the prior generation of product. They have better screens, faster processors, and other component enhancements. This cost hits Apple, yet they don?t raise prices. Instead, they work their way down the cost curve over the life of the product. So the gross margin takes a hit. It?s a step change. And because Apple is launching so many products at the same time, it?s a lot of step changes in the wrong direction.

Apple is also introducing the iPad Mini, with a significantly lower price point versus other iPads. It has a lower gross margin. So profitability goes down.

As an investor, none of this bothers me so long as Apple can do two things. First, it has to prove that it can get costs down on new products just as it always has. This shouldn?t present much of a challenge. Second, they need to show me that the iPad Mini expands the overall market for iPads. If the Mini doesn?t accelerate iPad unit growth, then Wall Street can correctly say that Apple either canibalized its own profits, or was forced to take this step due to pricing pressure from competing 7? tablets.

If iPad sales improve with the new form factor, I look at is as Apple gaining more share and capitalizing on a portion of the market that was shopping elsewhere, or not buying tablets before. But if iPad sales don?t grow then Apple has simply lost profit, which is bad. For the record, I expect the former situation to unfold.

The bottom line

I?m pleased with Apple?s quarterly performance and I understand the reason for their guidance falling below Wall Street expectations. I take a longer term perspective on the business than most analysts and investors. I love the products they?ve just unveiled and it?s obvious to me that I?m more likely to increase my spending on Apple products than slow it down. If others feel the same way I do, that?s good for the stock.

In the mean time, if you are an Apple shareholder, learn to stomach the volatility. It?s not going away.

A Window To (Cheap) Wine at Barley Mowat

A few weeks have gone by since I last updated the ol? LDB website wine counter, so let?s see where we stand as of today:

Liquor: 4 (+2)
Corporate: 5 (+3)
Wine: 12 (+2)
Beer: 0 (+0)

Raise your hand if any of this surprises you. One of those corporate ads is for the fall issue of the BC LDB?s Taste Magazine, which is basically 196 pages of LDB ads for booze stuffed between alcohol manufacturer ads for booze. Maybe they?ve hidden all the beer suggestions in there? Well, let?s see.

In those 196 pages of recipes, insipid articles and Ads Ads Ads! there are recommendations from various folk at the LDB for a total of 181 different products. Wow that?s a lot, but how do they break down into the LDB?s three booze categories? You won?t be too surprised:

Wine: 146
Spirits: 34
Beer: 1

Hey, at least we made the list! This particular beer recommendation was for Kingfisher because Diwali is coming up, and Kingfisher is brewed in India, right? Somehow I think the intern they hired to do these searches didn?t get the memo about beer (also, Kingfisher?a Pale Lager?was listed as a pairing for Vij?s Curry. Think about that for a second).

Okay, fine, but it?s not like they had other articles on food that bring beer to mind, right? What? A section about pumpkins? And another titled ?ancient grains.? Are they actually trying to piss me off?

Okay. Different tact. Maybe I?m being too much of an ass about this? Maybe completely screwing over the beer industry is just how business is done if you?re the provincial government arm responsible for selling liquor in your province? I mean, go look at the Autumn 2012 issue of the Liquor Control Board of Ontario?s ?Food & Drink? magazine. There?s nothing about beer in there? huh? you don?t say? A feature on Ottawa?s Wellington GastroPub, as part of a dedicated column called Pub Bites? (I?d love to link to it, but sadly it?s a paid subscription)

So, again we?re faced with overwhelming bias against beer when it comes time to show off products at the LDB. I wish I could explain what?s going on here. It?d be natural to just say the people doing the product recommendations at the LDB are just wine snobs, but they clearly are not. Have you actually SEEN the wine they?re recommending with these ads? Let?s just say they?re ?value priced? and leave it at that.

ONLINE GAMING COMPANIES COOPERATE WITH DUTCH AUTHORITIES

Companies hoping for a Dutch licence are respecting call to desist targeting Hollanders

The Dutch government, still bogged down by political wrangling on the road to online gambling legalisation (see previous reports) is nevertheless persisting with its campaign asking online gambling companies to stop targeting Dutch residents...and a significant number of companies have apparently agree to cooperate.

The publication Dutch News.nl reports that over 20 of the 40 online gambling firms approached by the Dutch authorities have cooperated, perhaps hoping it will improve their chances of achieving Dutch licensed status. Companies that have reportedly complied with the request include Bwin.Party, Ladbrokes and Unibet.

Earlier this year the Dutch Supreme Court ordered the online gaming companies to install software which would identify and block Dutch citizens.

The road to a more liberal approach to online gambling by the Dutch government has been long and tortuous since a commission recommended legalisation and an opening up of the market back in 2010, and is currently making little obvious progress (see previous reports).

Is the iPad Mini Worth Buying?

Apple has unveiled a new member of the family: the iPad Mini. This device is a clear response to the market pressure the cheaper Amazon Kindle Fire HD and the Nexus 7 have placed on the existing iPad. So how does this scaled down version of the iPad compare with its newly refreshed big brother and the Android tablets that still come in at a lower price?

Comparing Specs with the Competition
Screen Size: iPad Mini's comes in at 7.9 inches, compared to the 9.7 inch screen of the iPad and the 7 inch screens of the Kindle Fire HD and the Nexus 7. With a narrower bezel, iPad Mini fits a bit more screen into the same real estate.

Resolution: 1024x768 ? this is not the Retina display that Apple touts as its high end screens on the iPhone 5 and the bigger iPad. Rather, it's the same resolution as the iPad 2, but with more pixels per inch. Also, the Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire HD have higher resolution 1280x800 screens.

Thickness: 7.2mm thick ? that's roughly 1/3 of an inch, or a little thinner than a pencil, and significantly thinner than either of the leading competitors.

Weight: .68 pounds, 53% lighter than the fourth-generation iPad. Competing Android tablets weigh slightly more: Nexus 7 tips the scales at .75 lbs, and the Kindle Fire HD at .88 lbs.

Processor: The dual core A5 chip is same as the iPad 2 that came out in 2011, and even Apple says the A6 chip in the iPad 4 and the iPhone 5 is twice as fast for some tasks as the A5. The Nexus 7 has a newer quad-core NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor and the Kindle Fire HD has a 1.2 GHz Dual Core processor, but you can only compare the performance of these processors against the iPad once you benchmark them in the real world; the numbers and specs don't tell you everything. But I'd give the edge to the Nexus 7 purely on hardware.

Cameras: iPad Mini: front and rear-facing cameras. The camera on the back is a 5 megapixel, same as the iPad 4 but lower res than the iPhone 5's 8 MP camera. The Nexus and Amazon tablets have only front facing cameras that are lower resolution than the Mini.

[Related: iPhone5 ? Is it Worth the Money?]

Other Specs
The Mini will come in a Wifi-only model and an LTE version with access to cellular networks on the go. It will use the new smaller lightning connector so you'll need all new charging cords and adapters if you have lots of accessories with the previous 30-pin connector.

Apple says it gets 10 hours of battery life, is made primarily of aluminum & glass, and it comes in both black and white. It will be available for preorder on Friday, October 26 and is set to ship November 2.

Price
iPad Mini 16GB WiFi only ? $329 ($459 for the 16GB with LTE cellular connectivity)
iPad 4 16GB WiFi only ? $499
Kindle Fire HD 16GB ? $199
Nexus 7 16GB: $249 ? But rumors are flying of an even cheaper Nexus tablet releasing next week and/or a big price cut on the Google tablet in time for the holidays.

So What Should You Buy?
Nothing about the technical specs of the tablets makes any one of them a clear winner. Apple has an advantage in that the user-experience on the iPad and IOS is preferred by many, myself included. After living with both flavors, it's just easier, cleaner, and less hassle for me to use an iPad over a Nexus 7.? In my opinion, the iPad Mini will benefit from that advantage as well.

But if I were a committed Android phone user, if my digital media was all purchased from Amazon or the Google Play store, or if price was my only consideration, I would NOT get the iPad Mini.

The final decision these days is about ecosystem- where are you going to buy and live? In Google/Amazon world or in Apple world?

If Apple had priced the mini in the $249 range, I'd say they would have nailed the coffin shut on competing tablets. But at $329 that's still a steep price tag, and many will find Android and Amazon tablets under the Christmas tree this year and enjoy them almost as much as those who unwrap the iPad Mini that costs $130 more.

Ethics statement: I have used both an iPhone and a Samsung Galaxy phone this year. I have tested and lived with the iPad and the Nexus 7 and the Kindle Fire HD. I love a deal and always wish that the cheaper one were as good or better than the more expensive one. Sometimes that's true, sometimes it's not. I am giving you my honest opinion and I am not paid for recommendations.

Special thanks to the folks at Bay Street Emeryville for providing the location.

Whispers of the Sea

The sun was blaring down, bouncing off the choppy waves. Hugh had almost finished his little sculpture of a mermaid, it was a relatively easy project and he had many replicates of these types at home but something about this one was different. She had a haunting expression and looked liked she had just lost everything. He held her delicately, enticed by her and amazed that he had been able to carve her. Briefly looking up he caught sight of white sails on the horizon, looked like a ship was heading in. They would probably arrive in the next half an hour. Hugh casually rose, feeling there was no rush, and strode back along the recently furnished walkway - something that had taken him several days to complete.

His bare feet slapped the timber, he never really had been too fond of shoes nor of shirts for that matter, as his work usually required him to get hot and sweaty shirts where just sticky nuisances. A coarse, plaited twine with a single shell hung round his neck and gently tapped against his breast bone as he walked. The faded sandy coloured shorts rubbed against his legs, they weren't the most comfortable pair he owned but not much you can do when you wash them in sea water.

He headed straight towards the small cabin near the end of the harbour where Old man Harry, his boss, stayed. Despite him having no real contribution in bringing a ship in, he still needed to be alerted to when one arrived. As he reached the door, the old thing barely holding on it's rusted hinges, he quickly jerked it open and poked his head in.

"Harry, large white sails comin' in. 'Alf an hour max." His deep and slightly croaky voice awoke the sleeping man with a start. The bleary eyed man looked around, trying to figure out who had woken him from his drunken slumber.

"Wha-? Hugh, what'sat? Ugh, kay, just be off with you then." He was a man of few words.

"Right-o. If you see Blair tell him to find the twins to help me get this boat in."

"Uh huh."

And with that he was out. The twins were always at the Inn, messing around with Susie. Everyone knew that both of them loved her but never had there been any sort of inkling as to which she preferred. It was rumoured that she was quite happy to have them both. Blair was the man who knew everything about a ship and was usually found at the ship yard crafting dingy's and basically just fiddling around, he was the twins father and liked to keep as far away from them as possible as they usually got into trouble. As it so happened Hugh spotted one of the twins, Jacob, wandering down towards the beach. If Jacob was down here, either his brother John wasn't far away or Susie had made her choice. But seeing at his lively step it probably wasn't the latter.

"OI! Jake, get yerself over here. We got some sail's coming in." The younger boy turned and gave him a wave to show he heard and was heading over. Hugh nodded and turned back to watch the ship come in. He didn't really need both of them. It was difficult to bring a ship of that size in on his own, comfortable with two and then no sweat with three. But wherever John was and depending how far away didn't really matter as long as he had Jacob.

Just as the ship was approaching, Jacob finally decided to join Hugh on the pier.

"Took ya long enough."

"What? That big thing wasn't coming for a good five minutes, I had time." He said, a cheeky grin planted on his face. He had a crooked nose and small lips but he still had his boyish looks despite only being a year or so younger than Hugh.

"Whatever, just get ready to help me bring this boat in." He rolled his eyes, not really interested in what Jake was getting up to.

As the ship finally arrived he called out for the ropes to be dropped and as the thick cords dropped, he caught them with ease and swiftly went about tying them down. He had done this so many times that it was just habit. Then the gangplank came over, and as he helped to lower it down his muscles rippled and gleamed from sweat in the sun. Completed, he stepped back and stood waiting to see who was arriving today.

Bayonet company calls Obama 'ignorant' because troops still use bayonets

(Hollie McKay, Fox News) --?Designers, stylists and fashion industry publicists routinely clamor to outfit First Lady Michelle Obama, with press releases flying out the door any time she sports a certain brand. Fashion publications praise her designer selections and several books have been published that are solely devoted to analyzing her style and taste.

However, the fashion world has remained particularly quiet on the Ann Romney fashion front, with many questioning whether or not outspoken Obama supporter Anna Wintour is keeping stylists and designers away, silently threatening their standing should they endeavor to promote their outfitting of the wife of a Republican presidential hopeful.

(AP) ? Russell Means spent a lifetime as a modern American Indian warrior. He railed against broken treaties, fought for the return of stolen land and even took up arms against the federal government.

A onetime leader of the American Indian Movement, he called national attention to the plight of impoverished tribes and often lamented the waning of Indian culture. After leaving the movement in the 1980s, the handsome, braided activist was still a cultural presence, appearing in several movies.

Means, who died Monday from throat cancer at age 72, helped lead the 1973 uprising at Wounded Knee ? a bloody confrontation that raised America's awareness about the struggles of Indians and gave rise to a wider protest movement that lasted for the rest of the decade.

Before AIM, there were few national advocates for American Indians. Means was one of the first to emerge. He sought to restore Indians' pride in their culture and to challenge a government that had paid little attention to tribes in generations. He was also one of the first to urge sports teams to do away with Indian names and mascots.

"No one except Hollywood stars and very rich Texans wore Indian jewelry," Means said, recalling the early days of the movement. And there were dozens, if not hundreds, of athletic teams "that in essence were insulting us, from grade schools to college. That's all changed."

AIM was founded in the late 1960s to demand that the government honor its treaties with American Indian tribes. The movement eventually faded away, Means said, as Native Americans became more self-aware and self-determined.

There were plenty of American Indian activists before AIM, but it became the "radical media gorilla," said Paul DeMain, editor of News from Indian Country, a national newspaper focused on tribal affairs.

"If someone needed help, you called on the American Indian Movement, and they showed up and caused all kind of ruckus and looked beautiful on a 20-second clip on TV that night," DeMain said.

Means and AIM co-founder Dennis Banks were charged in 1974 for their role in the Wounded Knee uprising in which hundreds of protesters occupied the town on the site of the 1890 Indian massacre. Protesters and federal authorities were locked in a standoff for 71 days and frequently exchanged gunfire. Before it was over, two tribal members were killed and a federal agent seriously wounded.

After a trial that lasted several months, a judge threw out the charges on grounds of government misconduct.

Other protests led by Means included an American Indian prayer vigil on top of Mount Rushmore and the seizure of a replica of the Mayflower on Thanksgiving Day in Plymouth, Mass.

But Means' constant quest for the spotlight raised doubts about his motives. Critics who included many fellow tribe members said his main interest was building his own notoriety.

Means said his most important accomplishment was the proposal for the Republic of Lakotah, a plan to carve out a sovereign Indian nation inside the United States. He took the idea all the way to the United Nations, even though it was ignored by tribal governments closer to home, including his own Oglala Sioux leaders, with whom he often clashed.

For decades, Means was dogged by questions about whether the group promoted violence, especially the 1975 slaying of a woman in the tribe and the gun battles with federal agents at Wounded Knee.

Authorities believe three AIM members shot and killed Annie Mae Aquash on the Pine Ridge reservation on the orders of someone in AIM's leadership because they suspected she was an FBI informant.

Two activists ? Arlo Looking Cloud and John Graham ? were both eventually convicted of murder. The third has never been charged.

Also in 1975, murder charges were filed against Means and Dick Marshall, an AIM member, in the shooting death of a Sioux man at a saloon in the town of Scenic, S.D. Marshall served 24 years in prison. Means was acquitted.

His activism extended to tribes beyond the United States. In the mid-1980s, Means traveled to Nicaragua to support indigenous Miskito Indians who were fighting the Sandinista government.

Born on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, Means grew up in the San Francisco area and battled drugs and alcohol as a young man before becoming an early leader of AIM.

With his rugged good looks and long, dark braids, he also was known for a handful of Hollywood roles, most notably in the 1992 movie "The Last of the Mohicans," in which he portrayed Chingachgook alongside Daniel Day-Lewis' Hawkeye.

He also appeared in the 1994 film "Natural Born Killers," voiced Chief Powhatan in the 1995 animated film "Pocahontas" and guest starred in 2004 on the HBO series "Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Means also ran unsuccessfully for the Libertarian nomination for president in 1988 and briefly served as a vice presidential candidate in 1984 on the ticket of Hustler publisher Larry Flynt.

Means always considered himself a Libertarian and couldn't believe that anyone would want to call themselves a Republican or a Democrat.

"It's just unconscionable that America has become so stupid," he said.

Means often refused interviews and verbally blasted journalists who showed up to cover his public appearances. Instead, he chose to speak to his fan base through YouTube videos and blog posts on his website.

Means recounted his life in the book "Where White Men Fear to Tread." He said he pulled no punches in the autobiography, admitting to his frailties but also acknowledging his successes.

"I tell the truth, and I expose myself as a weak, misguided, misdirected, dysfunctional human being I used to be," he said.

Means died at his ranch in Porcupine, S.D. He announced in August 2011 that he had inoperable throat cancer and told The Associated Press that he would forego mainstream medicine in favor of traditional American Indian remedies.

Means' death came a day after former Sen. George McGovern died in Sioux Falls at the age of 90. McGovern had traveled to Wounded Knee with then-Sen. James Abourezk during the takeover to try to negotiate an end to hostilities.

"I've lost two good friends in a matter of two to three days," Abourezk said Monday. "I don't pretend to understand it."

Oglala Sioux Tribe spokeswoman Donna Salomon said wake services for Means' will be Wednesday on Pine Ridge, and his ashes will be scattered in the Black Hills on Thursday.
