South Africa rest Jacques Kallis from ODIs ? Cricket News Update

South Africa have rested veteran all-rounder, Jacques Kallis, from the upcoming three One-Day internationals against New Zealand, while picking up four uncapped players as per their policy to keep an eye on the future.

Kallis played in the opening Test against the Kiwis, during which he became only the fourth international player to amass 13000 Test runs. However, given the selection policy, it was best advised that the player is rested from the limited-overs bouts, which commences from January 19, following the conclusion of the second Test.

JP Duminy does not make the cut as he is still recovering from the Achilles injury he picked up during the tour of Australia. However, the management has again showed faith in inexperienced players and has brought in the likes of Quinton de Kock, Farhaan Behardien, Aaron Phangiso and Rory Kleinveldt to the ODI setup for the first time.

All featured in the recently concluded T20I series, which the team won 2-1. Kleinveldt has further featured for the Test side in the opening two matches against Australia. De Kock is likely to keep gloves, despite the presence of AB de Villiers as the selectors look to manage the skipper?s workload. De Villiers was omitted from the T20 squad at the last hour after putting in a request for an extended break.

Dean Elgar, Wayne Parnell, Imran Tahir, Albie Morkel and Justin Ontong have all been left out due to various reasons, ranging from form to injury. Colin Ingram is another notable addition, along with Ryan McLaren and Lonwabo Tsotsobe, who has fallen down the pecking order in recent time.

"We only have the three ODI matches against New Zealand plus another five against Pakistan to prepare our squad for the Champions Trophy in the middle of the year," Andrew Hudson, the convenor of selectors said. "The Champions Trophy also marks the halfway point to the next World Cup so this is a critical part of our preparation to win these two major events."

South African ODI squad: AB de Villiers, Hashim Amla, Farhaan Behardien, Quinton de Kock, Faf du Plessis, Colin Ingram, Rory Kleinveldt, Ryan McLaren, Morne Morkel, Robin Peterson, Aaron Phangiso, Graeme Smith, Dale Steyn, Lonwabo Tsotsobe.

Clinton returning to work next week; will testify on Benghazi

After leaving the hospital where she was already conducting official State Department business, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will return to Foggy Bottom next week, reports Bloomberg News:

Hillary Clinton to return to office next week, testify on #Benghazi: spokesperson

? Bloomberg News (@BloombergNews) January 3, 2013

A State Department spokesperson confirmed the news of Clinton's return to the office, although when, exactly, she will testify on the Benghazi attacks, remains unclear.?Her appearance should put to rest?the curious rumors?floating around right-leaning media suggeting that Clinton invented her concussion, and maybe her subsequent hospital visit, to get out of testifying on the State Department's involvement in the Benghazi attacks. Which by now could very well be a moot point: three State Department staffers?were asked to resign?following the department's internal investigation into the attacks, which Clinton acted upon immediately, even after she suffered a concussion.

Clinton was admitted to Manhattan's New York-Presbyterian Hospital on Sunday night due to a blood clot behind her right ear, caused by the concussion in mid-December. She left the hospital Wednesday, but only after a whirlwind of misunderstanding about whether she had actually been discharged from treatment.

RIM busts Mr. Blurrycam, patents tech to 'prevent inconspicuous use of cameras'

RIM patents tech to 'prevent inconspicuous use of cameras' through steady focus requirement

RIM's own smartphones have been the target of many a "Mr. Blurrycam" snap, but a new feature could put an end to "inconspicuous" shooting, according to a patent issued today. The tool would be in line with the company's mission to protect corporations from security vulnerabilities, which include not only unauthorized access to data, but also leaks from employees. According to the patent, "the camera restriction prevents a user from taking a picture of a subject if the device has not been steadily focused on the subject in question for a predetermined period of time." Just how long you need to keep your BlackBerry still could be dictated by individual IT departments, which would also have the power to flip the switch and push restrictions to an employee's device. While such a delay would certainly be an inconvenience for frequent shooters, it is a step forward from RIM's traditional strategy of shipping models without cameras altogether. We haven't seen any indication that such a technology will be implemented with future models, but thanks to the minds at RIM, patent junkies can get their fix now at the source link below.

The Fiscal Cliff Deal That Almost Wasn't

Harry Reid

Politico:

House Speaker John Boehner couldn?t hold back when he spotted Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid in the White House lobby last Friday.

It was only a few days before the nation would go over the fiscal cliff, no bipartisan agreement was in sight, and Reid had just publicly accused Boehner of running a ?dictatorship? in the House and caring more about holding onto his gavel than striking a deal.

Egypt budget deficit expected to widen to 200 billion pounds: agency

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egypt's budget deficit in the year to end-June 2013 could widen by 50 percent from the original forecast made in July, according to a figure released by the planning minister on Monday.

"The budget deficit is expected to rise to 200 billion Egyptian pounds ($31.5 billion) in the current fiscal year unless strict economic policies are put in place to confront it," the state news agency quoted Ashraf al-Araby as saying on Monday.

The 2012/13 budget released in July had forecast a deficit of 135 billion pounds compared to an actual deficit of 166.7 billion pounds for the previous year. Economists at the time said that forecast was optimistic.

President Mohamed Mursi earlier this month suspended a series of planned tax increases as the country prepared for a referendum on a contentious new constitution, which was passed on December 22.

The unpopular measures were deemed necessary to secure $4.8 billion Egypt is seeking from the International Monetary Fund, which wants Egypt to rein in its deficit.

The government said last week it would not implement the measures for at least two more weeks to give it time to explain them to different parts of society.

Prime Minister Hisham Kandil said on Sunday he expected talks with the IMF to resume in January.

Al-Araby predicted in November that this year's deficit would be 10.4 percent of gross domestic product, without stating the figure in pounds, up from the original forecast of 8 percent.
