Sports brings in $54 million for Montana campuses

BOZEMAN, Mont. (AP) ? The University of Montana's football team posted a $3.3 million profit in the fiscal year that ended in June 2012, while rival Montana State University posted a $1.15 million profit.

The Bozeman Daily Chronicle reports (http://bit.ly/U6qfkN) that's some of the information submitted to the Montana Board of Regents for their meeting in Helena on Jan. 8.

In all, the NCAA sports at the state's six four-year campuses brought in $54 million in revenue while spending $52.9 million for a gain of $1.1 million.

State spending on athletics was about 5 percent of general fund budgets for the schools.

Football brought in the most money at $22.3 million for a surplus of $4.6 million.

Of the 1,700 student athletes, 64 percent were men and 36 percent women.
