South Africa rest Jacques Kallis from ODIs ? Cricket News Update
South Africa have rested veteran all-rounder, Jacques Kallis, from the upcoming three One-Day internationals against New Zealand, while picking up four uncapped players as per their policy to keep an eye on the future.
Kallis played in the opening Test against the Kiwis, during which he became only the fourth international player to amass 13000 Test runs. However, given the selection policy, it was best advised that the player is rested from the limited-overs bouts, which commences from January 19, following the conclusion of the second Test.
JP Duminy does not make the cut as he is still recovering from the Achilles injury he picked up during the tour of Australia. However, the management has again showed faith in inexperienced players and has brought in the likes of Quinton de Kock, Farhaan Behardien, Aaron Phangiso and Rory Kleinveldt to the ODI setup for the first time.
All featured in the recently concluded T20I series, which the team won 2-1. Kleinveldt has further featured for the Test side in the opening two matches against Australia. De Kock is likely to keep gloves, despite the presence of AB de Villiers as the selectors look to manage the skipper?s workload. De Villiers was omitted from the T20 squad at the last hour after putting in a request for an extended break.
Dean Elgar, Wayne Parnell, Imran Tahir, Albie Morkel and Justin Ontong have all been left out due to various reasons, ranging from form to injury. Colin Ingram is another notable addition, along with Ryan McLaren and Lonwabo Tsotsobe, who has fallen down the pecking order in recent time.
"We only have the three ODI matches against New Zealand plus another five against Pakistan to prepare our squad for the Champions Trophy in the middle of the year," Andrew Hudson, the convenor of selectors said. "The Champions Trophy also marks the halfway point to the next World Cup so this is a critical part of our preparation to win these two major events."
South African ODI squad: AB de Villiers, Hashim Amla, Farhaan Behardien, Quinton de Kock, Faf du Plessis, Colin Ingram, Rory Kleinveldt, Ryan McLaren, Morne Morkel, Robin Peterson, Aaron Phangiso, Graeme Smith, Dale Steyn, Lonwabo Tsotsobe.
