alternative enclosures. - Techtalk Speaker Building, Audio, Video ...

  1. Default alternative enclosures.

    All:

I had a few ideas this morning about enclosure contruction. i know there are plenty of arguments about mdf and plywood etc. However i have a couple of different materials in mind. the first would be a construction form. The circle that contractors use to make a concrete piling out of. My thought is to cut a 2' Diameter section in half and add a top, bottom and flat front baffle to make an enclosure. Any thoughts on this would be great. What would it do.... The second idea is to make a front baffle that would accept a variety of drivers but maitain a fairly narrow profile. Say the profile is a regular 8" baffle but it has been designed to accept a 12" sub kinda like the auto DIY folks do with sub enclosures felt stretched over a mounting piece and laminated with fiberglass and resin. My idea behind this is comming up with some pretty cool looking encolures that look more organic than BOX - thoughts on this? tweet and mid could be recessed together in a shallow horn?

You mean something like this? They are 5 1/4 coaxials that I took out of my bike. They were going to be used outside on my deck, but the wife wanted them spaced too far apart so they ended up in my basement workshop. For that, they are great! YMMV, Mark

well sort of. more like if you put a soup can on end and cut in half. You would then have to long half/spheres. make a "lid" and "base" and front baffle and you have a curved back enclosure.

Unfortunately, I don't think that would be very strong. Those carboard tubes aren't very thick, and cutting them length wise might compromise the ridgness that comes from being a tube.

But hey,,,, give it a try and lets know how it comes out. No guts/no glory, right? Good luck, Mark

Do you mean like a sonotube? Another way to do it, if you want approximately a two foot diameter tube would be to use a bass drum. I've got one collecting dust in my basement (I've had it on Craigslist for $30, for months, and no one wants it). I've been very tempted to cut it up, or make a subwoofer enclosure out of it. It's a seriously high quality plywood tube with only a few small holes that would need to be plugged.

Statements: "They usually kill the desire to build anything else."

Yep, kinda pretty much like that. figued the larger sonotube stuff was pretty ridged and could be braced - yes?

You could definitely use the sonotube like you're describing. You would need to add numerous braces to replace the rigidity lost from cutting it in half. It would probably be a good idea to fiberglass the outer side as well for durability.

This is kinda what i had in mind for the bottom portion of the enclosure. This is an extreem example but picture a 10 or 12" mounted in a contoured enclosure, meeting with a recessed shallow horn holding the mid and tweet together. with the right paint it could be visually stunning but what happens with image?
